The project entails the synthesis of new quenched fluorescent activity-based probes for serine proteases and the application in imaging. This challenging project will have a main focus on organic synthesis, involving various forms of solution phase and solid phase chemistry, but at a later project stage will also contain biochemical evaluation of probes, microscopy and FACS analysis. The position is available from the beginning of 2017, and applications will be considered until the position is filled. Talented and motivated students who will finish their MSc degree spring 2017 are also encouraged to apply soon.

Profiel kandidaat

  • MSc degree in chemistry
  • Experience with solution and solid phase synthesis & purification methods
  • A strong interest in biochemistry
  • Experience with biochemistry techniques or fluorescent microscopy is a plus, but no necessity
  • Ambitious, motivated, creative and practically skillful

We offer a doctoral position for 4 years in a stimulating, interdisciplinary environment and scientific development opportunities in an international and dynamic team. You will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and will be registered in a specific program of the KU Leuven doctoral school of Biomedical Sciences.You will be supervised by well-trained scientists and receive thorough training.

Over KU Leuven:

The Laboratory of Chemical Biology at the KU Leuven works on the development of chemical probes for covalent labeling of proteins, with a particular focus on proteases. Protease biology is very complex, since most proteases are synthesized as inactive zymogens and once activated, are subject to post-translational regulation. We develop and apply tools, such as activity-based probes: molecules that specifically react with active forms of proteases. Their selectivity can be adjusted by the probe structure. We also develop probes for fluorescent imaging, inhibitors for intramembrane proteases, cleavable linkers for identification of the proteins targeted by our probes and proteomics methods to study protease action.
